Life has got in the way of blogging the last few weeks. A combination of assignments due, a workshop to prepare, family illness and kid-wrangling inevitably meant writing got pushed down the priority list. It’s frustrating, but that’s how life is at times. No amount of time management strategies can magic extra time or energy where there is none. I’m learning to release my expectations and focus on all I have to be grateful for.
I am grateful for the positive reception to the Wellbeing in Practice workshop I presented at the Occupational Therapy Clinical Workshops in Wellington last week. It was rewarding to have the opportunity to remind a wonderful group of occupational therapists of the need to look after their own wellbeing in their very important work. We agreed that it is often easier to focus on caring for others and giving great service – both of which are important. However as therapists our greatest tool is ourselves. When we are overloaded, stressed or unwell we cannot give our best to any part of our lives.
I am also grateful for the opportunity to learn more about behaviour change and motivation in my post graduate study. An academic career isn’t my calling, but I thoroughly appreciate those lecturers, researchers and academic writers who add to the knowledge base of our professions.
As I immerse myself in theories, models, and the study of occupation and behaviour, I am reminded once again that when we move in the direction of our values, and understand what is meaningful to us, life has a way of re-aligning.
