“To my mind the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” Bill Bryson
We have just returned from a three week family holiday in Malaysia. First time overseas for most of our kids. These are some of the everyday things we experienced as if for the first time….
– Air thick like wading in a warm bath
– Water from sealed bottles
– Feeling like toothpaste on the Monorail
– Squat toilets
– Genuine warm smiles from strangers
– Sumo sized bugs
– Rice, noodles, rice, noodles and more rice. Mum these cornflakes don’t taste the same!
– More unfamiliar bodies per square metre than ever experienced
– Shared connection with another mother as we watch our children play
– Eyes lighting up in reaction to us attempting foreign words of thanks
– How tolerance of other religions and cultures can make for a harmonious society.
It is our hope that our children will hold some of these experiences in their memories as reminders of what we often take for granted in our usual lives.
“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” Gustave Flaubert
